My Crack At A Holiday Gift Guide

You know what, fuck it I’ll throw my hat in the ring-

I went back and forth about sharing my own version of a gift guide. It feels like every time I open social media I’m berated with a million little tchotchkes slapped on a white background with the word gift guide tastefully typed across in script font. At the risk of sending my list into the holiday shopping content oblivion, here are some vintage and unique selections that might speak to you. Remember, gifting is a gift! Enjoy hunting down your little treasures and have fun;

A DVD player

There is something so homey about owning physical forms of your favorite media. I know it sounds almost materialistic and surely unsustainable in some eyes to start collecting DVDs again… but the amount of money wasted on TV subscriptions that you can only pray you’ve used enough times in the month to justify the price can be astronomical. The satisfying snap of opening up a DVD case followed by the whir of of DVD player opening up its mouth for you to feed it one of your favorite childhood memories is the warmest feeling and is absolutely worth rummaging at the thrift for.

A vintage watch

There is truly nothing sexier than the moment someone asks for the time and you get to flip up your wrist in a quick holier-than-thou swish while everyone scrambles for their phones. I've never been able to do this as it humbly takes me more than 30 seconds to read a watch but I always nod in admiration when other people do. Suffice it to say a watch makes a great gift for anyone and with the sheer amount of vintage and one-of-a-kind options out there, ain't no need to get one new!

A farm-to-table subscription

You may be thinking, but of course! For the home cook! While gifting fresh or local produce is an excellent choice no matter what the receiver's hobby is, I have personally found that prioritizing eating fresh, farm-to-table foods has replaced every skincare serum I have ever asked for for Christmas. Groceries are expensive, foods from farmers can make your body happy, and getting new ingredients to play with is a joy. You truly can’t go wrong with this one.

A styling service

Sorry I had to, BUT in my defense, I genuinely believe gifting a styling session, whether just two hours or a full package with a stylist is the kind of gift that keeps on giving. Gifting pieces of clothing can be hard with sizing, taste, and so much more to consider. Gifting sessions with a stylist so your loved one can work with the pieces they already have and learn about their personal style going fresh into the new year could be the perfect solution. All my styling services will be 20% off when you book a consultation before December 25th so book a half-hour styling session for yourself while you're at it!

A hand-knit accessory

Winter, in my opinion, is home to the best accessories of the year. Mittens, bonnets, neck scarfs, ponchos, head scarfs the list goes on. Prioritizing accessories that are knit gives you the opportunity to purchase from small businesses or independent artists so not only are you gifting to a loved one you're gifting to an artist with your purchase as well.

Independent magazines

I was gifted a copy of the first edition of Mildew Magazine for my birthday last year, and it was one of my favorite gifts I’d ever received. A fashion magazine that wasn’t polluted with ads and recommendations paid for by brands? That centered second-hand fashion? And had unique independent writers' points of view that weren't filtered through the voice of a multi-million dollar investment-backed publication empire? Yeah, I was hooked.

A juicy novel you can spend the rest of your Holiday cozied up with

For me, the worst part about the holidays is the zombie-like trance we all fall into between Christmas and the New Year. When we’re mostly still stuffed at home, not yet returning to school or work and we have nothing to fill our days with besides whatever new toys we've got. I always make sure to ask for a book to fill these cozy and sluggish days and these reads are sure to give your mind something to grip on to while while your body decays on the couch feasting on leftover mashed potatoes.
